J-1 Academic Training
J-1 students may accept employment directly related to their field of study through academic training. Academic training is limited to:
- 
               
               
A maximum of 18 months, or
 - 
               
               
The length of your full course of study in the U.S., whichever is shorter.
 
Approval must come from your J-1 program sponsor. The following information applies to J-1 students on ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ’s exchange program.
When You May Apply
You may be approved for academic training in the following cases:
- 
               
               
During summer vacation if you are registered for the following semester.
 - 
               
               
While school is in session for up to 20 hours per week (counted against your total allotment as if full-time).
 - 
               
               
After completing coursework but before depositing your thesis or dissertation.
 - 
               
               
After completing your program of study. The application deadline is 30 days after your final registration.
 
Application Process
Schedule an appointment with your J-1 program sponsor and bring:

Your original DS-2019
 - 
               
               
Your passport
 - 
               
               
A recommendation letter from your academic advisor on departmental letterhead, which must include:
- 
                     
                     
Your name, expected completion or graduation date, degree, and field of study
 - 
                     
                     
The goals and objectives of the training program, including location, supervisor’s name/address, weekly hours, and training dates
 - 
                     
                     
How the training relates to your academic field
 - 
                     
                     
Why the training is an integral or critical part of your program
 
 - 
                     
                     
 
The program sponsor will evaluate whether the proposed training is appropriate and effective. If approved, you will receive an updated SEVIS-compliant DS-2019 and a letter authorizing academic training.
Health Insurance Requirement
All J-1 students and their J-2 dependents must maintain adequate health insurance throughout their stay in the U.S., including during academic training after completion of studies. Minimum required coverage includes:

Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
 - 
               
               
Repatriation of remains: $7,500
 - 
               
               
Medical evacuation to home country: $10,000
 - 
               
               
Deductible not exceeding $500 per accident or illness
 
If your employer does not provide sufficient coverage, you must purchase insurance for yourself and any J-2 dependents for the full training period. Failure to maintain insurance may result in termination of your J-1 program.
